Recent development on the south side of Rapid City has created the need for future intersection improvements to the US16/16B/Catron Boulevard Intersection. Previous studies, first in 2007 (study not finalized) and then again in 2016, were initiated to identify improvements to accommodate the anticipated future growth in the area. The 2016 study showed growing levels of congestion at the intersection and identified that the intersection would operate under failing conditions based upon 2045 traffic projections, without the implementation of improvements.
A total of 8 build alternatives were considered to address existing and future traffic operational needs and two alternatives were recommended for further analysis after scoring each alternative based upon 6 project criteria. The two recommended alternatives, a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) and a Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI) will be further analyzed and refined as part of this study to select the final build option for the intersection which is currently programmed for construction in 2026.
The Study Area Includes the portion of the US16 corridor from the Moon Meadows Road Intersection to the intersection with Promise Road and the portion of the Catron Boulevard corridor between the intersection with Les Hollers Way and Wellington Drive (east). Each of the two build options will be further refined and evaluated based upon how they accommodate traffic to the planning year horizon of the year 2050, anticipated safety benefits, handling traffic during construction, and environmental impacts.
